Webinar on breast cancer at CSIR-NML

Jamshedpur, Sept 12: A webinar on early detection of Breast Cancer and the curative process was organized for staff members and their families by the Staff Club of CSIR-NML, Jamshedpur. Dr Natasha Das, the Cofounder and Director of Hazlo Consultancy Pvt Ltd that has been dedicatedly conducting such awareness programmes on self examination and detection of Breast Cancer, while elaborating on the topic stated, “Self examination and timely detection of the disease can save 92 percent of lives upto Stage 3. Annual clinical examinations of women over 40 years of age must be performed while those below this age-line should undergo the process every three years,” and added, “The risk factors that cause Breast Cancer are, apart from having family history, unhealthy diet, alcohol consumption, smoking and obesity. Late motherhood, that is, after 30 years of age and least or no breastfeeding can increase the chances of the disease in women. Males can also have this disease and usually are diagnosed at a later stage.”

The second part of the programme was conducted by the Medical Officer of CSIR-NML, Dr Priyanka Singh who spoke on Cervical Cancer. She explained, “Cervical Cancer vaccines are beneficial for prevention of the disease among boys and girls who are between 9 and 15 years of age. These vaccines also help in containing and preventing Cervical Cancer for people upto the age of 25 years provided they are unmarried. Flu vaccines too are good for children and elderly people. These (vaccines) can also double up as COVID-19 preventive vaccines. These Flu vaccines are available at the district headquarters of Indian Red Cross Society in Jamshedpur.”

Chief Guest at the webinar, Dr Debarati Chattoraj, reiterated the contentions of the two speakers, Dr Natasha Das and Dr Priyanka Singh and emphasized the need for clinical examination at regular intervals as specified by the two experienced medics.

.More than 70 participants attended the webinar including ladies of Janitorial and project departments as also casual workers, staff families, and permanent staff. The lectures were delivered in Hindi for the benefit of the majority of the attendees. The program was conducted in both online and offline modes.
