Jamshedpur: IMD, Ranchi Meteorological Centre has issued a weather alert for thundershowers, hail, and lightning across several parts of Jharkhand. The forecast also includes moderate rainfall in parts of northern Jharkhand, bringing much-needed respite from the rising summer heat. However, the weather is expected to stabilize from Saturday, April 5, with no significant alerts issued beyond today.
Residents of Jamshedpur and other parts of the state woke up to cloudy skies, setting the stage for a stormy day ahead. According to the IMD’s latest forecast, different regions of Jharkhand are expected to experience varying degrees of weather activity: Southern & East-Central Jharkhand: Likely to witness hailstorms along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph. Central & North-Central Jharkhand: Expected to experience thunderstorms/lightning, accompanied by gusty winds (30–40 kmph) at isolated locations.
The changing weather pattern in Jharkhand is attributed to two key meteorological systems: Western Disturbance Influence: A Western Disturbance persists as a trough in the middle and upper tropospheric westerlies. The disturbance is located at 5.8 km above mean sea level, extending along longitude 72°E, north of 26°N.
A trough in easterlies extends from South Interior Karnataka to southwest Madhya Pradesh, passing through a cyclonic circulation over Marathwada at 0.9 km above mean sea level. This system is contributing to the instability, leading to thunderstorms and hail activity over Jharkhand.
Despite today’s stormy outlook, IMD has confirmed that no significant weather alerts have been issued for Jharkhand from Saturday onward. This indicates a likely return to stable weather conditions over the weekend.
With hailstorms, gusty winds, and lightning expected in some areas, residents are advised to: Stay indoors during thunderstorms. Avoid standing under trees or open fields. Secure loose outdoor objects to prevent wind damage. Farmers should take precautions to protect standing crops from hail damage. With the monsoon still months away, today’s rainfall is expected to provide temporary relief from the rising temperatures while adding much-needed moisture to the soil.
