Jamshedpur, April 30: In a heart-warming display of courage, determination, and inclusive education, Kumari Nikita, a visually impaired student from Kerala Public School (KPS) Kadma, created history by becoming the first blind student of the institution to appear for the ISC Board examination. Scoring an impressive 78%, her result, declared on Wednesday, marked not only a personal milestone but a moment of celebration for the entire KPS Kadma community.
Coming from a modest Hindi-medium background, Nikita’s journey was anything but easy. Navigating a new academic system, an English-language curriculum, and the challenges of visual impairment, she stood firm with resilience as her constant companion.
But what made her journey truly exceptional was the unwavering support of KPS Kadma. Principal Sharmila Mukherjee, exemplifying leadership with empathy, went the extra mile to advocate for Nikita.
“We believed in her from the beginning. Every child deserves an equal chance, and it was our duty to ensure that Nikita could dream and achieve like any other student,” said the Principal, who personally requested the ISC Council to issue a specially tailored question paper for Nikita.
The school’s efforts extended far beyond accommodation. Teachers recorded audio lessons, shared accessible PDF notes, and trained Nikita in Braille during school hours. With the help of AI-based tools, Nikita converted materials into audiobooks and used screen readers to understand complex subjects. Her compassionate classmates, too, played a crucial role by sharing notes and assisting her with revisions.
Despite the emotional and social hurdles, subtle doubts and questions about her abilities, Nikita pressed forward. “KPS Kadma became my shield and my strength,” she shared. “They didn’t just teach me subjects; they taught me to believe in myself when the world wasn’t sure.”
Initially daunted by subjects like English and Economics, she overcame the odds with the help of sensitive teaching methods and accommodations designed by the ISC Council. Her perseverance and the school’s inclusive approach turned challenges into stepping stones.
Nikita is not only a student but also a gifted poet and singer. With over 200 motivational poems to her name, she continues to touch lives with her words. Her verses echo her deep inner strength, giving courage to others navigating similar paths.
Her message to the world is simple yet profound — “Vision is not limited by sight but by the boundaries we allow ourselves to create.”
Principal Mukherjee summed up the school’s philosophy, saying, “Education is about enabling every student to reach the full potential, regardless of the circumstances. Nikita is a shining example of what happens when a school chooses inclusion over indifference.”
Kumari Nikita’s journey at KPS Kadma is a reminder that true education lies in empowering minds and embracing hearts. She now dreams of inspiring other visually impaired students and encouraging schools to adopt inclusive policies that break down barriers.
With strength in her soul and belief in her dreams, Nikita has not just passed an exam, she has ignited a movement. (w/gsd)
