Demand action against teacher for thrashing student with cane; probe ordered
Jamshedpur: Hundreds of villagers of Dhirol panchayat under Potka police station here on Wednesday created ruckus at Bango Upgraded Middle School after the alleged thrashing of a student by a teacher.
The villagers took eight teachers of the school hostage for five hours while demanding action against the guilty teacher. The situation normalized following the intervention of local police officials and the block education expansion officer.
Sources said the incident took place around 7.30 am when Ravindra Rajak, a class VIII student of the school, reached the school as usual. One of the teachers, Gaurang Sardar, who was monitoring the cleaning work in the school, asked Rajak to join the task. The minor refused to do the cleaning work at which the teacher allegedly beat him up severely with a cane.
On coming to know about the incident, the studentís mother Shravanti Rajak reached the school and complained against the teacher. She alleged that the accused teacher misbehaved with her. Shortly thereafter, she informed local villagers about the incident. Within no time, hundreds of villagers barged into the school premises and searched for the accused teacher.
Sardar locked himself up in the school office fearing mob assault. Irked over the incident, the villagers took the other eight teachers including the headmaster Vinod Kumar hostage. The child was sent to Sadar Hospital for treatment where doctors discharged him immediately. Doctors said there were no marks of injury on the studentís body.
The agitated villagers demanded that the accused teacher be handed over to them. Potka police tried to persuade the villagers. Around noon, the REO-cum-BEEO Murari Shah reached the school and held a meeting with the Mukhiya Santoshi Oraon and other villagers. He assured to take action against the accused teacher.
He said a three member team would probe into the matter and take necessary action thereafter. He said the accused teacher would be deputed to the headquarters and that he would be replaced by a lady teacher Janki Murmu.
Police took the accused teacher in their custody and escorted him to the police station. The accused teacher alleged that he was being accused without any rhyme or reason. He said he had not misbehaved with the studentís mother.
