Jamshedpur : Over 500 villagers staged a gherao at the Arka Jain University campus at Mohanpur village under Gamharia police station area at Seraikela-Kharsawan district this morning.
The university is set up on a plot of 24.5 acres of land which had been provided by the state government on 30 years lease five years ago. But the villagers claimed that the university management have taken one acres of land from about a dozen villagers of Mohanpur by fraud.
A section of agitated residents of Mohanpur had gheraoed the campus. Some protestors set up a blockade on a road linking to the university to Tata-Kandra Road. The protestors continued ruckus at the university campus for over three hours after police and administrative officials beside the local MLA, Champai Soren intervened the situation returned to normal.
A police party from Gamharia, followed by sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Seraikela, Abinash Kumar reached the spot. Later, Seraikela sub-divisional officer, BasharatQayum also reached the spot. The JMM vice-president and Seraikela MLA, Champai Soren arrived at the last.
The ruckus was over 2 pm after it was decided that a tripartite talk will be held at Circle office in Gamharia on Tuesday.
Gamharia-based Arka Jain University, the only private varsity in Kolhan, recently launched four job-oriented courses this academic session. The other courses are BSc in optometry, BSc in bio-technology and BTech in mechanical, civil, computer science, electrical and electronics engineering. The university already has diploma courses in engineering, but demands from various quarters prompted it to launch the BTech courses.
