Vigilance stepped up at Bengal-Jharkhand border, six illegal distilleries destroyed

Jamshedpur, March 25: With just 48 hours left for the assembly elections in Bengal, the East Singhbhum district administration has increased vigilance along the Bengal-Jharkhand border from Thursday.

The police have started checking commuters’ details like Voter I-Card and vehicles’ permits beside other things. Five new  check posts have been set on the Jharkhand side.  Moreover, the State Excise Department has started random search for liquor consignment as well as illegal distilleries meant for making country liquor.

The district administration has come into action in carrying out the exercise in accordance with the Elections Commotion guided so as to ensure a fair and fearless elections there in the neighbouring state.

Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) ‘ Kuldeep Toppo said they have set up check posts and those crossing are undergoing the checking. They have started checking every one who is crossing over to Bengal.

” We are keeping an eye on every person crossing the border. The policemen are also checking the vegetable vendors at the checking points set up at Chakulia, Barsole and Galudih close to the Bengal border, ” said Toppo.

The SDPO said as unwanted persons may enter into Bengal with vested interest, police men posted at the checking points are jotting down the vehicle’s registration number beside the Aadhaar card number of that crossing over to Bengal.

A general alert has been sounded up near the border. Checking posts have been set up at Bodam and Patamda in the East Singhbhum district bordering Bengal.

Meanwhile, the Jharkhand Excise’s Jamshedpur office has started an extensive drive against liquor along the places close to the Bengal border.

A senior official of the department said separate teams of Excise officials on Thursday destroyed over half-a-dozen distilleries at Bodam and Ghatsila police station areas close to the Bengal border.

“We have dismantled six illegal distilleries, one person was also arrested. The raiding teams have a huge quantity of materials required for liquor manufacturing and also prepared country-made liquor from those places, ” said the official.
