Vegetable sellers demonstrate at Tata Motors to protest displacement

Jamshedpur: Displaced vegetable sellers under the banner of Jharkhand Sabji Vikreta Sangh on Friday staged demonstration in front of Tata Motors plant. They demanded rehabilitation.

The activists led by JMM leader Ramadas Soren continued their demonstration till late afternoon. The prominent demands raised by the activists include granting of suitable land for the vegetable sellers who were displaced from market during anti-encroachment drive.

He said the displacement is being carried up in a very large number.  If a commission comes to existence, it would recommend the government as to exactly how to rehabilitate a family or an unauthorised  colony if evicted in public interest.   He pointed out, in fact, long before resorting to demolishing the unauthorised houses set up on encroached land, the Commission will find out alternative place. He pointed out that the state government has a commitment toward the welfare of the people, and it just cannot sit and watch helplessly when slums and bustees set up unauthorised plots are razed in the name of beautifying the cities.

“I have resolved to continue the protest along with my workers in all these place, and if the government fail to come out with any strong policy to tide over the problem,  we will intensify agitation, said Soren.

On this occasion, a vegetable seller said that so far thousands of  people have been displaced  in the current anti-encroachment drive.    He said the question is not only related to providing the displaced persons with accommodation, but also related to providing the basic amenity like drinking water and sewage system as well as medical facility to the people living in bustees.
