Railways Crack Down on Poor Food Quality on Patna-Tatanagar Vande Bharat

Jamshedpur: The Ministry of Railways has taken decisive action against poor catering standards on the Tatanagar-Patna Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 21896). Following a passenger complaint on March 15, 2026, a rigorous investigation exposed significant lapses in hygiene and food quality, leading to heavy financial penalties and contract termination.

Severe Penalties for Negligence

The investigation, conducted by joint teams from the Railways and IRCTC, revealed the use of substandard ingredients and a failure to meet mandatory service benchmarks. In response, the Ministry executed the following:

  • Fine on IRCTC: The Ministry slapped a ₹10 lakh fine on IRCTC as the nodal catering agency.

  • Penalty on Caterer: The private service provider faced a massive ₹50 lakh fine.

  • Contract Termination: The Ministry immediately terminated the contractor’s agreement and blacklisted the agency from future railway services.

Enforcement of “Zero-Tolerance” Policy

Officials emphasized that high-speed, premium trains like the Vande Bharat demand superior service standards. To prevent future occurrences, the Ministry has initiated several systemic changes:

  • Intensified Monitoring: All railway zones must now increase inspections and strictly enforce food safety compliance.

  • Corrective Mandates: Authorities have orders to take immediate action against any deviation from quality protocols.

  • Accountability: The Ministry reaffirmed its “zero-tolerance” stance, warning that any compromise on passenger welfare will result in immediate financial hits and loss of contracts.

Empowering Passengers

The Ministry is urging passengers to help maintain these standards by reporting grievances via official helplines and digital platforms. Officials noted that real-time feedback remains the most effective tool for ensuring accountability and prompt intervention.
