Urban Development department studying mono rail feasibility

Ranchi: Chief Secretary Sajal Chakraverty today instructed the Urban Development Department to study the feasibility of mono-rail in the capital city.

He said the city must have a robust transport system. The Chief Secretary said that by ensuring the most appropriate, sustainable and cost-effective implementation program in transport system the urban transportation of Ranchi city can be developed.

At a meeting with the Planning Department at the Project Building, he said that there was a need for exploring alternative options of mobility to solve the traffic issues in Ranchi, which has witnessed 26.72 per cent growth in population in a decade.

The Chief Secretary directed the Urban Development Department to prepare the comprehensive mobility plan of Ranchi city for strengthening the transport connectivity with bus stand, railway station, airport and other important destinations.

Addressing the meeting, Development Commissioner Sudhir Prasad said that narrow corridor areas were preferred for mono-rails as metro rails cannot be built. He said that Ranchi cannot have metro rail and commuter rail because the city has large number of sharp curves along the main road.

At the meeting while Principal Secretary Planning D.K. Tiwari stressed on selecting appropriate transit technology, the Secretary Urban Development. A.K. Singh said that the need was to take immediate steps for upgrading public transport infrastructure.
