The Jharkhand Contract Workers’ Union demanded a high-level probe into safety lapses at UCIL’s Narwa Pahar underground uranium mine on Saturday.
The demand followed a severe accident involving Tapan Nayak, a raise driller working for contractor M/s DCS. Nayak fell from a height inside the hazardous underground facility.
Emergency responders rushed Nayak to MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur after the incident. Doctors are currently treating his critical injuries.
Union representatives met mine officials on Saturday to submit a four-point charter of demands. They insisted on a full investigation with a safety officer present.
The union requested that the Mine Manager submit an official accident report under the Mines Act of 1952 within seven days.
Delegates urged investigators to scrutinize the Assistant Manager of Safety, Safety In-charge, Foreman, and Mine Mate for potential negligence.
The charter demands complete medical coverage for Nayak throughout his recovery. It also calls for full wage compensation during his workplace absence.
Union leaders warned that underground uranium mining requires strict safety enforcement to protect workers. They criticized management for assigning dangerous tasks to contract staff.
The union argued that management should instead grant permanent jobs to displaced locals and affected families in the area.
In the same meeting, union leaders raised grievances regarding unpaid earned leave for 2024–25. The claim affects drivers of contract ambulances and school buses.
Management representatives assured the union delegation that officials would clear the pending vehicle crew payments shortly.
Mines Manager M.K. Singh led the management team during the discussions. Sudhir Soren headed the union delegation alongside other representatives.
