Two runaway children find shelter in Childline

Seraikela, August 11:  Two half brothers, one an 11 year old and the other just 5, ran away from home because of the physical and mental torture meted out to them by their father and step mother on the pretext of getting household chores done. The children ran away from home with the intent of taking shelter in their maternal uncle’s home in Goilkera. They had been on the road since two days and were besotted with hunger for they did not have food during this period.
Both kids were spotted by women labourers working near the Birsa Munda Stadium who spoke to them in the Ho dialect and the children narrated their tale of pains. The women spoke about the children with supervisor Baban Singh of Saraikela Nagar Panchayat. Singh immediately informed Khurshid Alam, Balmitra and police station in-charge of Seraikela police station who reached the Stadium and started questioning the children adopting an affectionate tone. Meanwhile, while passing through the road, Sanand Acharya alias Tulu, District Vice President of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha who was passingby the road inquired about the matter. He immediately arranged for food for both the children. Acharya also informed the concerned officials about the matter and asked them to make arrangement for safety and comfort of the children as per relevant rules and asked that after finding the truth, should be handed over to the children’s maternal uncle.
“Strict legal action should be taken against the so-called parents who torture children.”
Children narrate their pain
Both are half brothers one being 11 years old and the other 5. Both said that the father of the two children, a resident of Basconagar in Adityapur, had three marriages. Out of which the 11-year-old boy is the child of his father's first wife passed away. He cannot even tell his mother's name. Similarly, the 5-year-old boy is also unable to tell about his mother properly.
Both stated that the mother and sometimes the father regularly tortured them physically to get household work done by the two kids. The children showed several injury marks on their bodies. They said that they had not eaten anything for the last two days. Tired of torture, they took a bicycle and ran away from home to go to their maternal uncle's house in Goilkera.
Childline Inspector on reaching the spot and taking both children under his protection, the Balmitra police station in-charge presented them before the Child Welfare Committee after which both the children have been kept under the protection of Childline till further action.
