Two killed, 20 others injured as pick-up truck overturns at Chakradharpur

Jamshedpur, July 6: In a major road mishap, two passengers were killed and over 20 were injured, when a pick-up truck they were travelling in overturned at Silphori village on Sonua-Chakradharpur road under Chakradharpur police station area in West Singhbhum district on Friday morning.

The passengers who died were construction workers and were coming from various villages in Sonua to Chakradharpur. The identity of those killed is also not known except that one is a 24-year-old woman and another is a 35-year-old man.

As the news of the mishap spread, the police rushed to the spot. The injured were taken to a government hospital in Chakradhapur where they were given first-aid. Of the seven persons, including six women were referred to MGM Medical College Hospital.

The doctors on emergency duty at the medical college hospital sent six of the injured to Tata Main Hospital, where two succumbed to their injuries.

The condition of four others whose identity is yet to be established is still serious at the Tata Main Hospital. All those undergoing treatment at the Tata Main Hospital are women in the age-group of 23-30 years and have sustained head injury.

At the MGM Medical College Hospital is one 23-year-old woman. She has sustained injuries in the face. She said that they were coming on a pick-up truck for working at a construction site in Chakradharpur this morning.

“As per our routine work we were coming to work along with about 20 other women workers in the pick-up truck which was moving at a very high speed. Suddenly it overturned. I cannot say how did the vehicle overturn,” she. She said she got senseless due to the effect of her injuries and when she opened her eyes she found herself on the hospital bed.

OC, Chakradharpur, Gopinath Tiwary confirmed that the driver of the ill-fated pick-up truck was driving at a high speed and had jumped away from the vehicle as it started overturning.“ We are investigating the incident. We will take action against the driver,” he said.
