Jamshedpur: A special police team arrested two persons from Azadnagar police station area on Thursday for allegedly extorting money worth Rs 10 lakh from a city contractor.
The accused persons, identified as Mohammad Rafiq Khan and Gulzar Ahmad Ansari, both residents of Old Purulia Road, had allegedly made threatening calls to the contractor and demanded Rs 10 lakh in cash from him.
They threatened to kill him and his family members in case he refused to pay them up at the stipulated place, said Amol Venukant Homkar, senior superintendent of police (SSP), East Singhbhum. Ansari worked as a driver in the household of the contractor before being arrested.
The SSP said the accused persons were caught on the basis of their phone number which was used to make the threat calls.
A police team comprising police officers from different city police stations nabbed the accused persons and interrogated them in connection with the threat call. The accused persons reportedly spilled the beans and told cops they had extorted the contractor.
An FIR has been lodged in this connection against the accused duo by the police on the complaint of the contractor.
Cops are trying to find out if more people are involved in the extortion bid. They said they were trying to get further leads into the incident.
