Washington: President Donald Trump has endorsed a “final and best offer” to Tehran following the collapse of high-stakes nuclear negotiations in Islamabad, Vice President J.D. Vance announced Sunday.
After 21 hours of intense deliberation failed to produce an agreement, Vance informed reporters that the U.S. has presented a definitive proposal. “We leave here with a very simple proposal… We’ll see if the Iranians accept it,” he stated.
Trump’s Direct Involvement
The Vice President emphasized the President’s hands-on approach throughout the process, noting that the negotiating team maintained constant contact with the White House.
-
Frequent Communication: The team consulted the President “a half dozen to a dozen times” during the 21-hour window.
-
Clear Mandate: Trump instructed negotiators to pursue a deal in good faith while maintaining strict limits.
The Nuclear Impasse
Despite “substantive discussions,” the two nations remain at odds over the future of Iran’s nuclear program. Vance identified the primary sticking points:
-
Red Lines: Washington clearly defined its boundaries, which Tehran ultimately rejected.
-
Long-term Guarantees: The U.S. demands an affirmative, permanent commitment that Iran will not seek nuclear weapons or the tools to build them.
-
Verification of Will: Vance noted that the U.S. has yet to see a “fundamental commitment” from Iran regarding long-term denuclearization.
“The President told us: you need to come here in good faith and make your best effort to get a deal. We did that,” Vance said.
National Security Coordination
The negotiating team coordinated closely with the entire national security apparatus throughout the talks. While Vance characterized the U.S. position as “flexible and accommodating,” he admitted that the teams failed to make any significant headway.
The administration now awaits Iran’s response to what it characterizes as its final attempt at a diplomatic resolution.
