CII Jharkhand organizes workshop on advanced 5S & QC

Jamshedpur, Nov 29: CII Jharkhand organized a workshop on advanced 5S & QC: The Powerful tool for Implementation in the Era of Industry 4.0.

The workshop aimed to help industries strengthen their operational practices by focusing on the core 5S principles—Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain—while linking them to Lean Manufacturing and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). The objective was to equip participants with the knowledge and practical tools to improve productivity, foster continuous improvement, and build a solid foundation for long-term organizational success.

Umesh Kumar Singh, Convenor, CII Manufacturing & Engg Panel & Managing Director TRF Ltd, emphasized the central role of quality in the Industry 4.0 era, highlighting the evolution of frameworks like 5S, Quality Control, and Total Quality Management into transformative tools for digital excellence.

He stressed the importance of integrating human ingenuity with technologies such as IoT, machine learning, and predictive analytics to create intelligent, adaptable manufacturing systems. Singh urged cultivating a forward-thinking mindset to redefine quality, foster resilience, and drive innovation in modern manufacturing ecosystems.

PP Rtn Prof Chandreshwar Khan, FIE, ACF, PHF, Management Consultant and Trainer, in his deliberation emphasized the need to cultivate a progressive mindset in the Industry 4.0 era by building upon established knowledge and adopting a scientific approach. Highlighting the evolution of quality management from control to assurance, he stressed the importance of learning, unlearning, and relearning to adapt to challenges posed by AI. Prof. Khan urged the younger generation to draw inspiration from global practices, such as Japan’s, to elevate India’s industrial potential. Citing examples like core competence at Tata Steel, Jamshedpur, he showcased how embracing systematic methodologies can drive excellence and position India as a global leader.

Pankaj Kumar, TQM & TPM Facilitator & Ex Chief (TQM & Corporate Quality Assurance), Tata Steel Ltd emphasized the enduring relevance of Total Employee Involvement (TEI) and Quality Circles (QC) as powerful tools for continuous improvement. He highlighted the importance of refreshing foundational practices like 5S and QC in the Industry 4.0 era, as these principles remain critical for building strong organizational foundations.

The workshop on Advanced 5S and Quality effectively equipped participants with profound insights into the strategic implementation of 5S principles and the pivotal role of Quality Circles in achieving operational excellence.
