Jamshedpur, July 3 : After series of campaigns to enforce discipline amongst traffic offenders, especially helmetless bikers through fines and awareness session, city traffic police are now working on various other ways to educate riders along with taking fines.
A Traffic Department official said that though they are taking fine at major roads but people seem to pay fine and then again repeat the same offence and not wearing helmet has become their habit. They are now tying up with local NGOs like Rotary Club and Lions International so that the offenders can be educated rather than just taking fines.
He said that the department has pamphlets on traffic awareness designed to educate people against the danger of not wearing helmets apart from increased penalty as per directive of the government.
Due to manpower crisis we cannot continue awareness alongside checking drive and the idea is to take help of NGOs to educate people. We often see that youths are carrying helmets on the handle of their bikes. We are also teaching them on ways to wear the helmet and remain safe, said the official.
Traffic police along with Tata Steel subsidiary Juscos safety wing are educating offenders and making them realise the hazards of ignorance of rules.
As part of the initiative ZimmedaarNagrikZimmedaarShaher, the Safety Department of Jusco, has been conducting a Road Safety Awareness Campaign near JUSCO Corporate Office and at the N Road Traffic Signal, Bistupur.
Sukanya Das, a senior official of corporate communications department of Jusco, said that they have carrying drive to educate people about road safety rules. From time to time we conduct drives to spread awareness. We also have short films on road safety, which are screened for public as well as school students.
The short films have the desired impact, with one biker saying it was scary and others speaking of how the pain-choked voice of a road accident victim had shattered them.
The film talks about why one should avoid using a mobile phone while crossing a road, the need for car drivers and passengers to wear seat belt, the importance of not driving while drunk, why one should wear a helmet and respecting road rules.
