Top Bihar-Jharkhand Maoist Leader and Wife Surrender Before Telangana Police

Hyderabad (IANS): In another blow to the banned CPI (Maoist), its Central Committee Member Pasunoori Narahari and his wife Medara Danamma surrendered before the Telangana Police on Tuesday.

Director General of Police C.V. Anand produced the senior underground leaders of the Maoist outfit before the media.

Pasunoori Narahari alias Vishwanath alias Salai Da serves as the Bihar-Jharkhand Special Area Committee (BJSAC) secretary, while Danamma alias Latha alias Poonam alias Joba is a State Committee Member (SCM).

The DGP said that this surrender pushes the last surviving Eastern Regional Bureau of CPI (Maoist) to the verge of collapse.

A native of Telangana’s Hanumakonda district, the 64-year-old Narahari joined the Radical Students Union (RSU) during the first year of his degree course. In 1988, he married Danamma, a native of the Guntur district.

According to police, late Puli Anjaiah—the then CPI (ML) People’s War AP State Committee Secretary—influenced Narahari to formally join the CPI (ML) People’s War in 1982. Narahari then joined the Kunta Dalam, which operated in the Sukma district of Chhattisgarh.

The party promoted him to the rank of State Committee Member (SCM) in 2006, and he joined the Bihar-Jharkhand Special Area Committee (BJSAC) as an SZC Member, serving there until 2010. He then led the Technical Department team, a seven-member unit under the BJSAC, until 2014. That same year, the party transferred him to the Bihar State Committee, where he managed the Gaya District Organisation until 2017. In 2017, he earned a promotion to Central Committee Member under the Eastern Regional Bureau (ERB).

Police stated that Narahari possesses extensive expertise in manufacturing and maintaining firearms, mortars, rockets, rocket-propelled grenades, grenades, and booby traps. He also trained Maoist cadres in weapons production, repair, and maintenance, while simultaneously handling senior-level technical and organisational responsibilities.

Danamma, 55, joined the Maoist movement after marrying Narahari. In 1997, she joined the Technical Department Team in South Bastar, Dandakaranya, Chhattisgarh. The party promoted her to DCM in 2000 and transferred her to the Nagpur Technical Department Team.

Police arrested her in Nagpur in 2004, but she rejoined the party after securing bail and leaving jail in 2011. From 2011 to 2012, she served as a DVC Member on the Bihar-Jharkhand Special Area Committee (BJSAC). In 2018, a special plenum meeting promoted her to SCM in the BJSAC.

The DGP stated that authorities have handed over demand drafts for the total eligible reward amounts—Rs 25 lakh to Narahari and Rs 20 lakh to Danamma—in accordance with the Telangana government’s rehabilitation policy. They will also receive further benefits under the policy for surrendered cadres.

C.V. Anand emphasized that the state duly cares for the health of all Maoist cadres who surrender in Telangana, irrespective of their native place. He noted that officials are currently processing health cards for all cadres who surrendered between 2024 and 2026, fulfilling a promise by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, and will issue them shortly.

The DGP revealed that 822 cadres of CPI (Maoist), including five Central Committee Members and 23 State Committee Members, have surrendered since 2024.

He said the Telangana Police, through the dedicated and coordinated efforts of the Special Intelligence Branch, demonstrated exceptional commitment and strategic effectiveness in 2026, achieving remarkable success in countering Left-wing extremism.

During 2026, a total of 264 underground CPI (Maoist) cadres surrendered in Telangana, reflecting growing trust in the government’s rehabilitation policies and the sustained pressure from security forces. Additionally, forces recovered 238 firearms in Telangana in 2026 alone, significantly depleting the group’s armed strength.

Overall, the efforts of the Telangana Greyhounds and district police, led by the Special Intelligence Branch in 2026, mark a decisive turning point in the fight against extremism. The surrender of senior cadres, including top leadership earlier in 2026, has already pushed Maoism to its final stage of survival, the DGP said.

The police chief added that only three active underground cadres from Telangana presently serve in different formations of the CPI (Maoist) outside the state, including Central Committee Member Muppala Laxman Rao alias Ganapathi.

He appealed to them to give up armed struggle, join the mainstream, and avail themselves of the benefits of the Telangana government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy.
