Jamshedpur, September 11: Tata Main Hospital’s Psychiatry department, in collaboration with Manipal Tata Medical College (MTMC), marked World Suicide Prevention Day with a range of events aimed at enhancing mental health awareness.
The main feature of the event was the address of Professor of Psychiatry at Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP), Ranchi, Dr Varun Mehta who spoke on ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide.’ The lecture drew a diverse audience, including doctors, nurses, medical students, and Tata Steel employees.
Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President of Corporate Services at Tata Steel, delivered the keynote address, stressing the importance of work-life balance and effective time management in managing stress. Sanjeev Kumar Chaudhary, President of the Tata Workers’ Union, highlighted the critical role of family support in navigating stressful times.
In the lead-up to World Suicide Prevention Day, several initiatives were held, including a session on September 6 on ‘Emotional Wellness’ for trans-persons employed at Tata Steel and a session for parents on ‘Emotional Safety of Adolescents’ on September 8, with 70 and 130 participants, respectively.
The day’s events included prize distributions for poster and essay writing competitions for school students (grades 8-12), and poster and reel-making contests for MBBS (MTMC) and nursing students. Over 30 schools from Jamshedpur took part in these contests. The event concluded with a skit performed by MBBS students.
The program was coordinated by Dr. Manoj Kumar Sahoo, Head of the Psychiatry Department at TMH, and attended by Dr. Sudhir Rai, General Manager of Medical Services at Tata Steel, Dr. G Pradeep Kumar, Dean of MTMC, Dr. Mamta Rath Dutta, Chief Consultant and Head of Medical Support Services, and Shailesh Kumar Singh, Deputy President of the Tata Workers’ Union.
