TMH conducts seminar to generate awareness on prevention of suicide

Jamshedpur : Department of Psychiatry, Tata Main Hospital (TMH), in its effort to prevent suicide and generate awareness, conducted a seminar today on ‘How to cope with exam stress and failure’ for students, parents and teachers in Tata Main Hospital auditorium. September 10 is observed internationally as World Suicide Prevention Day.

On this occasion, Ruchi Narendran and Shrimanti Sen were the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour respectively. A skit was presented by students of ADL Sunshine School to create awareness on suicide prevention.

Chief Guest for the occasion Ruchi Narendran, addressing the gathering said ‘Suicide Prevention has become a topic of great concern today, especially amongst the youth.

This is one of the most sensitive stages of life that we all pass through. It brings with itself besides expectations and joy, a certain amount of stress arising due to the constantly changing socio-economic scenario.

I urge all the young minds to make the best use of the different clubs in the schools created primarily to address this concern.

At Tata Main Hospital, we have a well-equipped department of Psychiatry which is one of the best places in the city that a stressed individual can reach out and get help. Life is precious and must be preserved, not self-destroyed for the sake of a reason that could have been solved by other ways.’

Every year, over 800,000 people die from suicide, this roughly corresponds to one death every 40 seconds. The number of lives lost each year through suicide exceeds the number of deaths due to homicide and war combined.

In 2012 it was found that Suicide is the second leading cause of death in the age group of 15-29 years globally. Overall, it is estimated that for each person who died of suicide there were over 20 others who made suicide attempts.
