Thunderstorms, gusty winds forecast in Jamshedpur till August 7

Jamshedpur: India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Ranchi centre has issued a forecast of thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by gusty winds (30–40 kmph) at isolated places across Jharkhand from August 4 to August 7. The weather activity is being attributed to the prevailing monsoon trough and an upper-air cyclonic circulation.

According to the forecast, isolated parts of the state will witness thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds on August 5. The pattern is expected to persist on August 6 with similar intensity, particularly over central and northern Jharkhand. On August 7, the activity will continue but is likely to weaken gradually by the evening.

The IMD has urged people to take precautions during thunderstorms, avoid open areas, and ensure safety during lightning occurrences.

As per the IMD’s synoptic analysis, the monsoon trough at mean sea level currently stretches from Amritsar, Chandigarh, Shamli, Shahjahanpur, Lucknow, Chapra, Bankura and Canning before extending southeastward into the northeast Bay of Bengal. Additionally, an upper-air cyclonic circulation has formed over northwest Bihar and adjoining northeast Uttar Pradesh, extending up to 4.5 km above mean sea level and tilting southwestwards with height. This setup is enhancing moisture incursion and atmospheric instability over Jharkhand, triggering localized thunderstorms and strong winds.

Meanwhile, Jharkhand has recorded 46 per cent surplus rainfall this monsoon season, ensuring healthy water levels in reservoirs and rivers. However, frequent thunderstorms and lightning strikes have also resulted in casualties and property damage in recent weeks.
