Three arrested for demanding Rs 5 lakh from contractor

Jamshedpur, July 24: West Singhbhum police arrested three persons for allegedly demanding levy (extortion money) in the name of Maoists from a contractor in Tonto block on Wednedsay.

SP West Singhbhum Indrajeet Mahatha said the accused persons, identified as Sukhram Ramtai, Jagdish Ruidas and Suraj Bari, all history-sheeters, were arrested from Nakahasa village, on the basis of a tip-off. A special team led by the SDPO of Jagannathpur Pradip Oraon and Deputy Commandant of CRPF 197 Battalion Sanjeev Kumar jointly carried out the operation. He said the accused persons had demanded Rs 5 lakh from the contractor and threatened to stall all work in case the payment was not made or police were informed about the demand for levy. The contractor later complained to the police, said Mahatha.

According to the SP, the three persons had been to jail in different cases of crime earlier. During police investigation, it was found that the three had no links with any Maoist organization, he said.
