Third Line Between Adityapur and Tatanagar Railway Station Likely to Become Operational by September

Jamshedpur

In a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at easing railway congestion, freight trains are expected to start operating on the newly developed third line between Adityapur yard and Tatanagar Railway Station up to the Salga Jhari cabin by September this year.

The move is expected to significantly improve operational efficiency on the busy Howrah–Mumbai rail corridor by separating freight and passenger train movement.

Major Relief for Passenger Trains

Railway officials said the main objective behind commissioning the third line is to reduce congestion caused by heavy freight traffic on the existing two railway lines. At present, passenger trains often face delays because goods trains occupy the tracks for long durations.

Once the third line becomes operational, freight trains will move independently, reducing waiting time for mail and express trains and improving punctuality.

Extensive Technical Upgrades Underway

To meet the targeted deadline, the railways are carrying out extensive technical and signalling upgrades across the section. The work includes installation of new panels and integration of the third line with the Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) system.

Railway engineers are currently replacing and modernising panels from the Adityapur yard through Tatanagar up to the Salga Jhari cabin to ensure smooth operations.

RVNL Handling Strategic Connectivity

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has been entrusted with connecting line number 7 of the Tatanagar station yard to the new third line.

This strategic connection will enable freight trains coming from Adityapur to move directly toward Kharagpur without interfering with passenger train operations at the main platforms of Tatanagar Railway Station.

Trial Runs Before Commissioning

Before opening the line for full-scale freight operations, the railway authorities will conduct detailed trial runs and safety inspections. The project also involves multiple “line blocks” for upgrading signalling systems and track points.

After completion of all technical work, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) will inspect the section and grant final approval for train movement.

Big Boost for Chakradharpur Division

The project is considered crucial for enhancing the carrying capacity of the Chakradharpur Railway Division, one of the highest revenue-generating railway divisions in the country due to its massive industrial and mineral freight loading.

Railway officials believe the commissioning of the third line will not only streamline freight movement but also provide long-term benefits to passengers travelling through the Tatanagar section.
