United Nations Day is a global commemoration held annually on 24th October since 1948 having 193 members all over the world . It has its headquarters in New York. According to the UN there are 195 sovereign states. The others two are called observing states (Palestine and South Sudan). Arabic, Russian, Spanish,Chinese, Arabic, English and French are the six official languages of UN. Originally there was 51 members of United Nations who drafted a charter on Sansfrancisco with the following missions:
� Maintaining peace and security to prevent future disputes.
� Developing friendly relations among
the member Nations.
� Protecting human rights.
� Improving living standards and
promoting social progress.
� Uphold international law.
� Provide food and shelter to the
affected people on every natural
disasters.
The United Nations function in six principles organs:
General Assembly – All members Nations have equal representation, discuss the issues, make the policies, budget of UN, appointment of the non- permanent members to the security council. All new members are added by the General Assembly.
Security Council- The Security Council has the mission of establishing peacekeeping operations and international sanctions. Military actions against any nation is adopted through its resolution. China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, United States are it’s permanent members. Permanent members have the Veto Power which means if they vote against a resolution the motion is dropped.
International Court of Justice: It has its headquarters at Haque in Netherlands. One of the main organs of the UN with the aim to solve out the legalities of member states and settle their disputes. The panel of judges appointed by General Assembly and security council for the period of nine years which gives advisory or opinion.
United Nation Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) : The UN organ for policy review, recommendation on economic, social and environmental matters. It has nearly 54 members selected for 3 years on rotation basis.
The Secretariat: The Secretariat is appointed by General Assembly, the head of the Secretariat is Antonio Guterres who has been elected for 5 years and plays an important role in setting agenda, deliberate decision making body of UN.
The UN Day marks the anniversary to maintain International Peace and promote human rights. In 1971 UN General Assembly recommend the day to be observed by members state as a public holiday. It’s a day to make the world a better place for everyone for the sustainable development of next generation by 2030. The UN has several sustainable goals :
� To end poverty by all forms and means.
� End hunger to achieve food security
and improved nutrition.
� Promote healthy lifestyle and healthy
well-being at various stages.
� Ensure quality education and learning opportunities for one and all.
� Enrich gender equality and empower all
women and girls.
� Assure safe, clean water and sanitation
for all.
� Easy access to affordable, reliable,
sustainable and modern energy for all.
� Provide better employment
opportunities for sustainable growth
and development.
� To build resilient infrastructure and
Industrialization.
� Reduce inequality and promote
equality and justice for all.
� Multiply consumption and production
patterns.
� Immediate action to control climate
change with its detrimental effects.
� Preserve our seas, oceans and save
marine resources.
� Consume forest reserve, combat
desertification, land degradation and
prevent biodiversity loss.
� Sustain the means of implementation
and global partnership for
development.
Every year on UN Day we should act together with oneness to make the world a better place to live.
