First phase investment Rs 2,245 cr, more in 2nd phase, says Tata Steel MD

Jamshedpur, April 3: Tata Steel MD and CEO, TV Narendran attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the expansion project of Tinplate Company of India Limited (TCIL), a subsidiary of Tata Steel in Jamshedpur on Monday.

In his address, Narendran stated that the Tata Group had more than 100 year association with Jharkhand. “Tata Steel has been investing here through its associate companies with Tinplate being an example. An amount of more than Rs 2,245 is being invested in Tinplate Company of India (TCIL) in the first phase and will be followed up by more in the second and later phases.”

TV Narendran informed that a MoU to the effect had been signed in Delhi about two to three years ago for this TCIL project. “This project is very important for Jamshedpur and Tata Steel. Tata Steel is continuously moving forward. Tinplate Company has a history of more than 100 years. It is the number one company in manufacturing packaging steel.”
The Tata Steel MD and CEO, TV Narendran said that the Tata Group was braced up to bring in Hotel Taj to Jamshedpur shortly and also mentioned that currently, the Group was already operating Hotel ginger in the city. In addition, Narendran mentioned, “A cancer hospital has been set up by the Tata Group in Ranchi and would be inaugurated soon to provide treatment to cancer patients. As a matter of fact, the Tata Group has always worked in tandem with the government and will continue to do so.”

Hemant Soren, Chief Minister of Jharkhand graced the occasion as Chief Guest and performed the groundbreaking ceremony at the site.
Having completed 100 years in 2020, TCIL has embarked on its next journey towards sustainability and growth. Currently, its capacity stands at 4,15,000 TPA.
First phase of expansion project, which involves an investment of around Rs 2000 crores, will ensure additional capacity of 3,00,000 TPA, leading to a total capacity of 7,15,000 TPA by the year 2026. The upcoming facilities will have state-of-the art technology and higher levels of automation to cater to domestic and export markets, minimize man-machine interface, enhance safety aspects and designed to meet the EU environmental norms.
Established in 1920, TCIL began its manufacturing journey with Hot Dipped Tinplate in 1922, followed by the manufacturing of Electrolytic Tinplate in 1979 and Cold Rolling Mill operations in 1996. In 2012, TCIL’s capacity was enhanced to 3,80,000 TPA for producing Tinplate Material & Tin Free Steel, along with lacquered and printed sheets.
