Jamshedpur: Tatanagar Railway Station is poised for a major infrastructure upgrade as plans for the maintenance of Vande Bharat Express trains and the expansion of the coaching depot have reached the final stage. The Chakradharpur Division of South Eastern Railway has submitted a detailed proposal worth ₹383.78 crore to the Railway Board, seeking administrative and financial approval for the ambitious project.
The information was provided by South Eastern Railway in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query filed by Shashank Shekhar Swai, a member of the Railway Passenger Committee.
High-tech depot planned at Loco Colony
According to the proposal, the existing coaching depot at Tatanagar Railway Station will be shifted to a new location in the Loco Colony area. The new facility will be equipped with modern infrastructure designed to handle the maintenance, inspection, and technical testing of advanced Vande Bharat train sets.
Railway officials believe the state-of-the-art depot will significantly improve operational efficiency and ensure timely maintenance of semi-high-speed trains operating in the region.
Growing importance of Tatanagar
Tatanagar has emerged as an important hub for Vande Bharat services in eastern India. At present, the Tata-Patna Vande Bharat Express and the Tatanagar-Brahmapur Vande Bharat Express originate from the station. In addition, the Ranchi-Howrah and Howrah-Rourkela Vande Bharat Express trains pass through Tatanagar regularly.
The proposed depot is expected to support the increasing number of Vande Bharat services and strengthen the station’s role in the railway network.
New train opportunities for Jamshedpur
Railway officials say the project will substantially enhance the capacity of Tatanagar station and create opportunities for the introduction of additional Vande Bharat services connecting Jamshedpur with more destinations across the country.
The expanded maintenance infrastructure is also expected to reduce dependence on other railway depots and improve the turnaround time of train sets operating from the region.
Employment and technical development
Apart from boosting railway infrastructure, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities and contribute to technical skill development in the region. The construction and operation of the modern depot will require skilled manpower and support services, providing a positive economic impact for the local community.
Work to begin after approval
Officials from the Chakradharpur Division have indicated that the tendering process and groundwork for the project will commence immediately after the Railway Board grants the necessary approvals.
If approved, the ₹383.78-crore project will mark one of the most significant railway infrastructure developments in Jamshedpur in recent years and further strengthen the city’s position as a key railway hub in eastern India.
