Jamshedpur, July 25: As part of the Safe Train Operation Plan on the Chakradharpur Railway Division line, 25,500 sleepers will be replaced. Preparations are underway to upgrade the signal system from Ghatshila to Chandil, a project approved in the budget to facilitate the operation of both passenger and freight trains on the Howrah-Mumbai railway line. This upgrade aims to increase train speeds by replacing rail lines, sleepers, signal panels, traction, and other operational equipment over the 741 km line that spans 87 stations in the South East Zone.

In addition, the budget includes provisions to install signals, panels, and other operational systems in a dozen branch lines within the division. The Chakradharpur Division aims to transport 160 million tonnes in the financial year 2024-25, as targeted by the Railway Board and South East Zone, to boost revenue. Consequently, railways will repair the lines at 22 loading points and yards located in three districts of Jharkhand (East and West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan) and five districts of Odisha (Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar), allowing freight trains to travel 110 km without issues.

Previously, under the Safe Train Operation Scheme, lines and sleepers were replaced from Nimpura in Kharagpur to Kandra Chandil via Tatanagar at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore. Railways also routinely change lines and sleepers during scheduled blocks. The current plan involves another phase of line and sleeper replacements.
