Jamshedpur: Tata Steel has unveiled a comprehensive development roadmap for Jamshedpur, focusing on infrastructure, sports, healthcare, and community welfare, while also outlining its position on lease renewal and land-related issues.

The details were shared by DB Sundara Ramam, Vice President (Corporate Services), Tata Steel, during an interaction with journalists at the Centre for Excellence. Speaking on the future of the steel city and Tata Steel’s lease renewal, Sundara Ramam said the company is preparing for large-scale investments, ranging from urban infrastructure to sports and social development.
The announcements underline Tata Steel’s long-term commitment to Jamshedpur’s development, balancing industrial growth with sports, healthcare and inclusive community welfare.
On Incab’s 177 Acres, he said that the decision now is with the government. Clarity is emerging over the 177-acre land owned by Incab. Sundara Ramam said that after the lease expired on December 31, 2025, Tata Steel will now hold direct negotiations with the Jharkhand government under a new agreement. He added that a land survey has already been completed in coordination with the district administration, and a formal proposal has been submitted to the state government.
On the long-pending question of whether several bastis fall inside or outside the lease area, Tata Steel reiterated that the final decision rests with the government. However, Sundara Ramam assured that basic amenities such as electricity and water will continue to be provided to residents, irrespective of whether the settlements are eventually classified inside or outside the lease boundary.
Keenan Stadium to Be Restored
In a major boost for sports enthusiasts, Tata Steel announced plans to revive Jamshedpur’s historic Keenan Stadium, allowing the city to once again host major cricket matches. Talks are underway with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) through the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA). Additionally, a 52-bed women’s hostel has been completed at the Naval Tata Hockey Academy, benefiting female athletes in hockey and archery.
Expansion of Infrastructure and Healthcare
- Sonari Airport: As per Airport Authority of India guidelines, the runway width is being increased to ensure aircraft safety during emergencies. The runway length will remain unchanged.
- Tata Main Hospital (TMH): A high-tech spinal clinic has been launched. Patients can now also make online payments from anywhere in India or abroad.
- New Sports Complex: On the lines of the JRD Tata Sports Complex, a new sports complex at Kalinganagar, Odisha, was inaugurated on January 1.
CSR and Community Development Push
Through the Tata Steel Foundation, the company has helped people in Jharkhand and Odisha access government welfare schemes worth Rs 3,700 crore over the past nine months. Currently, Tata Steel’s community outreach covers 6 million people, with a target to reach 10 million by 2030.
For community development, Rs 600 crore is being invested in collaboration with the Gates Foundation and other partners.
