Tata Steel�s Iron Making Division Organizes Sumilan Program

Jamshedpur, Nov 20: Tata Steel�s Iron Making Divisionorganized Sumilan Program on November 19, 2019, at the Steelennium Hall in the Tata Steel Works. Sumilan is a communication forum where the senior leadership interact with the shop floor contractor employees and Vendor partners to improve workplace safety and personnel involvement. It is a two way communication with Contractor partners and their employees on a selected theme based on the current Safety performance of the organization. The aim is continuous safety improvement at Tata Steel.

The event was attended by Chief Coke Plants, Prakhar Mishra, Chief Blast Furnaces, Padmapal, Vice President TWU Harishankar Singh, Chief Safety, Vijay Kumar Nirala, Head Safety, Sanjay Mishra, Chiefs and Heads of IM division, UCMs, Vendor partners and their employees, and other safety professionals.

Poonam Shukla, Sr. Manager Safety IM, welcomed the gathering, set the context of the proceedings and presented the status update of Business Partners. (Sept-Oct�19).

Prakhar Mishra, congratulated the Business Partners for good safety performance. He also opined that this is a first-time initiative in IM Division and could be deployed horizontally. In his opinion, fast safety communication through WhatsApp groups is effective. He emphasized the importance of learning from incidents and safety accidents from other locations.

For commendable safety performance, safety initiatives and Kaizens (the practice of continuously improving the way a Company operates), M/s TPS Infrastructures, M/s TRL KROSAKI, M/s NASEERUDDIN & Sons, M/s NALCO Waters and M/s Gaurav Enterprise were recognized and awarded.

Speaking on the occasion, Harishankar Singh advised all employees to work as per the SOPs, follow safety instructions and never do anything rash or in overconfidence. He said that most accidents happen due to overconfidence and by not following safety rules and norms. He further added that repetition of incidents is a cause of concern. He wished that Vendor partners have more proactive engagement with their workforce.

Mr Padmapal congratulated the prize winners for their safety contributions and performances. He was happy to see the enthusiasm amongst Vendor supervisors and employees, which gave confidence for continuous safety improvement. He assured required support and assistance to their initiatives from the Company�s side and expected similar commitments from Vendor partners also. He emphasized the need to strengthen JCC (Job Cycle Check), revisiting and reviewing SOPs � for effectiveness and adequacy. He hoped for larger skill coverage amongst Vendor employees. He was sure that Night audits could reveal gaps in systems and should be addressed effectively. He reminded all present that the Journey has just begun and there is a long distance to cover.

Nirala, in his speech, expressed happiness in seeing �new energy, initiative and direction� amongst Vendor employees. �This initiative will strengthen our Safety Excellence Journey�, he said and added that he was confident that Skill, Training and Certification will boost the Safety efforts. �We must set our focus on Systematic approach and implementation of recommendations effectively. Repeat incidents and breakdowns are always painful� he concluded.
