Tata Steel to Deploy World’s First EASyMelt Technology at Jamshedpur; Cut Emissions by 50%

New Delhi/Jamshedpur: Tata Steel has signed agreements with Paul Wurth, S.A., a subsidiary of SMS Group GmbH, to deploy the world’s first EASyMelt (electrically-assisted syngas smelter) technology. The company will convert its E Blast Furnace at the Jamshedpur Works into an industrial demonstration facility for the technology.

The project aims to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 50% compared to the furnace’s current baseline operations. This initiative marks a transition toward low-carbon steelmaking by integrating electrical heating and syngas injection into existing ironmaking infrastructure.

“The transition to low-carbon steelmaking will be shaped by our ability to reimagine and transform existing production ecosystems,” said T. V. Narendran, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel. He noted that the collaboration with SMS Group is a step toward the company’s goal of reaching net zero.

Jochen Burg, CEO of SMS Group, stated that building the first industrial-scale EASyMelt facility paves the way for future brownfield decarbonization projects across the global steel industry.

The two companies previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding in June 2023 to explore ironmaking decarbonization. Following a front-end loading study, Tata Steel approved the phased implementation of the technology. The project supports Tata Steel’s target to achieve net zero emissions by 2045.
