Mumbai, July 15: Tata Steel announced on Monday its ambitious plan to double its manufacturing capacity in India, aiming to reach approximately 40 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Currently producing 21 MTPA, the steelmaker intends to capitalize on growth opportunities in India, primarily through expansions in Jamshedpur, Gamharia (Jharkhand), Kalinganagar, and Meramandali (Odisha). This move would significantly increase Tata Steel’s share of India-manufactured steel to over 75%, up from the current 62%.

The company, a global steel leader with a capacity of 35 MTPA worldwide, emphasized sustainability as a cornerstone of its strategy. Tata Steel aims for Net Zero Carbon by 2045 and has committed to significant investments in low-CO2 steelmaking technologies, including a major initiative in the UK with government support. In the Netherlands, Tata Steel plans a substantial reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, contingent on governmental backing.

As part of its growth strategy, Tata Steel is actively pursuing both organic and inorganic expansions across its global operations, reaffirming its vision to become one of the world’s most respected and valuable steel companies.

Will aid workers affected by job losses at UK facility: N Chandrasekaran

Tata Steel has committed to working closely with the UK government and unions to provide significant investment in supporting the skill development of workers affected by the modernization of its Port Talbot plant. This initiative follows Tata Steel’s shift to a low-emission electric arc furnace (EAF) process, which is expected to result in approximately 2,500 job losses.

Addressing shareholders at the 117th Annual General Meeting, Tata Steel Chairman N Chandrasekaran acknowledged the challenges posed by this transformation, particularly for employees whose roles may change or be phased out. He affirmed the company’s commitment to facilitating a smooth transition by ensuring substantial investment in skill development programs. The EAF project aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 5 million tonnes annually while maintaining steelmaking operations in Port Talbot and safeguarding a majority of jobs.
