Tata Steel organizes �SUMILAN�, communication forum for senior leadership

Jamshedpur: Tata steel�s Apex Contractor Safety Management Sub-Committee today organized SUMILAN (a two way communication forum where the senior leadership interacted with the Contractor partners) at the Steelenium Hall. The topic was�Improvement in Contractor Labour Management (CLM) and Communication on Contractor Safety Management (CSM).�

Avneesh Gupta,Vice President Shared Services, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Mr ShahnawazAlam, Vice President TWU was the Guest of Honour. Vilas N Gaikwad, Chief Safety-(India & SEA), Rajat Madhur, Chief-Procurement (MRO & Services), Gopal Prasad Choudhary, Chief Security and Brand Protection, Prakash Singh, Chief Capability Development and TWU office bearers, Chiefs and Heads from various plants and Contractor partners in large numbers participated in the function. Other locations joined through Video conferencing.

Gaikwad, in his welcome address set the context for the proceedings. He emphasized on the advantages of Star rating system & Skill assessment / certification. He stressed on the need to reduce contractor related incidents and spoke on how TSL is addressing the issue of skill deficiencies.

He enumerated on what was being done and how the focus was on skill certified employees for the Steel Works.

In his address, Avneesh Gupta articulated on how important it was to come safely, work safely, remain safe and return home safe. Further he added that a bit of inconvenience or discomfort is tolerable as long as safety of workmen and systems are not compromised. �Let people be skilled, and by doing things as per procedures and systems, we can become a Zero Harm company�- he said.

Alam, Vice President �TWU encouraged all workmen to speak up on any violation and raise concerns through various forums. He further said �We should soon be a Zero Harm work place�.

The event had a Safety skit on �Speak-up� by PATH and screening of CRM accident based safety film �Antim Saans�.

Anil Kumar Sah and Keshav Kumar shared the initiatives taken for simplification of the Gate Pass Process and follow up for Medical High Risk cases.
Rajat Madhur spoke in detail about Vendors� star rating system and how higher rated contractors will be preferred for getting contracts in the assessment system.

Rabindra Singh of Capability Development highlighted the Company wide skill mapping done, mobilization of vendors for certification, and the efforts made in getting placement for trained and certified contractor employees.

In the interactive session, contractor partners raised concerns about Health & Medical related issues, Bus service in Night hours and Canteen facilities for workers who come during shutdowns, etc. The dignitaries answered their queries and assured all support on these issues.

SUMILAN was attended by over 500 participants. The programme focused primarily on Contractor safety, process simplification and capability development.
