Tata Steel observes World Heart Day

Jamshedpur: On the eve of the World Heart Day, the occupational health services department of Tata Steel today organised an awareness programme for its employees in the Steelenium Hall.

The chief guest for the occasion, Mr. Suresh Dutt Tripathy, VP, HRM, Tata Steel, in his address underlined two aspects of heart – emotional heart and mechanical heart. He said that through regular and effective life style management approach, both aspects can be addressed and help bring happiness in our lives.

World Heart Day was created in the year 2000 to inform people around the globe that heart disease and stroke are the world�s leading cause of death, claiming 17.3 million lives each year.

Together with its members, the �World Heart Federation� spreads the news that at least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided if the main risk factors, tobacco, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity, are controlled.
World Heart Day is observed on September 29, each year. Activities such as public talks and screenings, walks and runs, sporting events are organized worldwide.

This year�s theme addresses the importance of a life-course approach to the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with a focus on women and children. This campaign will highlight what actions can be taken through a person�s life to reduce their risk of CVD.

Mr. P N Singh, President, Tata Workers� Union stressed on the effects of smoking on smokers and non-smokers and the urgent need to address the menace. He appreciated the initiative taken by the department to spread awareness on the subject.

Earlier in the programme, Dr. O B Krishna, Chief, Corporate Safety, Tata steel, observed that special health awareness programmes for female employees including contract female employees had been started by the Company two years back and that the results have been quite positive given the efforts put in to ensure regular check-ups and follow-ups.A communication pack on World Heart Day titled �Take the road to a healthy heart� was also released during the function.Dr. V Bharat, HOD, Cardiology & ICU, TMH, delivered key note address on the subject. Programme was co-ordinated by Dr. Sugata Sen, PMO and the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Smita Gaikwad.
