Jamshedpur, Jan 16: Tata Steel Nederland (TSN) has commissioned a new production line for packaging steel, marking a major step towards sustainable and future-ready steel manufacturing. The new line uses Tata Steel’s innovative TCCT (Trivalent Chromium Coating Technology), which enables environmentally responsible production while already meeting upcoming European chemical-use regulations.
Tata Steel Nederland is the exclusive developer and patent holder of TCCT technology and is also supplying it to other steel producers, helping set a new European standard for sustainable packaging steel. The technology ensures safer working conditions, improved efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

According to the company, the entire production process is now carried out at a single site, resulting in better logistical efficiency and a simpler supply chain. When combined with Protact, a polymer-coated packaging steel, the TCCT process eliminates the need for an additional lacquer layer at the customer’s end. This leads to lower costs, fewer chemicals and a shorter production cycle, while meeting the strictest food safety standards.

Arne Hoogervorst, Manager Packaging at Tata Steel Nederland, said the TCCT technology ensures compliance with future REACH legislation while offering benefits for both the environment and employees. He added that the TCCT-Protact combination provides customers with a safer, more efficient and eco-friendly solution for packaging steel production.

The company also highlighted the strong sustainability credentials of packaging steel. In the Netherlands, over 95 per cent of steel packaging is recycled into new steel products, including food and aerosol cans. Steel packaging offers long shelf life for food products, helping reduce food waste, and its magnetic properties make it easy to separate from other waste.
With its high recycling rate and circular economy benefits, steel remains the most recycled packaging material. Through innovations like TCCT, Tata Steel Nederland continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability, safety and efficient production in the packaging steel sector.
