Jamshedpur : Unidentified criminals shot dead a man, identified as SD Yadav, 50, an employee of Loco Division of Tata Steel, on a goods train carrying coal near Tisco Railway Bridge over river Kharkai late Monday evening.
The victim was taken to Tata Main Hospital where he succumbed to critical bullet injuries.
Police said the criminals, suspected to be members of goods train robbers gang, pumped bullets from close range into the victim�s chest after making an abortive attempt to stop the vehicle. The culprits asked Yadav to stop the vehicle which was going slow. But Yadav sped up the train which led the culprits to open fire on him.
After shooting Yadav, the culprits fled the scene. The victim was rushed to hospital by his colleagues. He bled profusely as he was being admitted in the CCU, sources said.
Joint teams of Jugsalai, Bistupur and Adityapur police stations carried out raids in search of the killers across Jugaslai, Bagbera and Adityapur. Cops suspect the role of the racket involved in theft in train wagons carrying coal and valuable equipments to and from various private companies including Tata Steel, sources said.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Amol Venukant Homkar said police were trying to track down the shooters on the basis of information obtained from the staff of the Loco Division. He said several teams were working together to find out the circumstances under which Yadav was shot dead.
Tata Workers Union members including president PN Singh and general secretary BK Dinda reached the hospital soon after coming to know of the incident. They demanded stern police action against the culprits and safe environment for the workers.
