Tata Steel Scales Global AI Strategy with Google Cloud Deployment

Jamshedpur: Tata Steel and Google Cloud announced a major expansion of their strategic partnership, deploying a massive fleet of over 300 specialized AI agents across the steelmaker’s global value chain. The move shifts Tata Steel’s AI strategy from experimental projects to a unified, enterprise-wide “agentic” ecosystem, scaling autonomous capabilities across the organization in just nine months.

Building a Data Command Centre

Tata Steel’s transformation rests on two primary platforms that turn decades of siloed operational data into a competitive advantage:

  • Zen AI: This internal low-code platform allows software developers and frontline managers—not just data scientists—to build and deploy their own AI agents. Using Google Cloud’s Agent Development Kit (ADK) and BigQuery, Zen AI unifies structured data with unstructured sources like video and documents.
  • Tata Steel Digital Assistant (TDA): A sophisticated portal that acts as a command centre for decision-making. TDA synthesizes global public data, internal financial records, and proprietary user data (like call recordings and spreadsheets) to provide predictive market intelligence and navigate supply chain shifts.

Transforming the Shop Floor and Safety

The partnership brings AI directly to the manufacturing floor with a focus on high-risk zones. The specialized agent Safety EyeQ analyzes live video feeds to ensure workers strictly adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The agent triggers real-time alerts if it detects hazards, such as equipment moving too close to hot materials.

Additionally, Asset Sphere agents evaluate equipment health to provide proactive maintenance plans, significantly reducing unplanned downtime. In customer service, multimodal AI models now analyze complaint images and text automatically, slashing average response times by 50%.

Eliminating Administrative Bottlenecks

Beyond manufacturing, Tata Steel uses agentic AI to reshape internal operations:

  • HR Automation: TDA now resolves over 70% of routine employee tickets autonomously.
  • Business Processes: Dedicated agents handle complex back-office workflows, including intelligent invoice processing and GST classifications.

Leadership Perspectives

“Working with Google Cloud has allowed us to turn AI from a technical experiment into a specialized partner for every employee,” said Jayanta Banerjee, Chief Information Officer, Tata Steel. “From predicting asset maintenance to reducing customer response times, we are using agentic AI to simplify the most complex parts of our business.”

Sashi Sreedharan, Managing Director, Google Cloud India, noted that Tata Steel has moved at “unprecedented speed” to achieve a scale few in the industry have reached. “Their success demonstrates what is possible when an organization anchors its strategy in a unified AI and data ecosystem,” he stated.
