Jamahedpur, May 31: In 1988, resolution was passed by the World Health Assembly, calling for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on 31 May.

World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on 31 May.

The day is intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to more than 8 million deaths each year worldwide, including 1.2 million which are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke (passive smoking).

This year Tata Steel Foundation observed World No Tobacco Day with children in five Masti Ki Pathshala schools being run by TSF in Rajnagar, Sarjamda, Bagunhatu, Pipla and Tinplate. Some of the children of these schools have already used tobacco products before coming to these schools. The purpose of organizing this event is that children should understand the dangers of using tobacco and should never use them again.

Total 326 children participated in the event.

Sujeet Mahato from Rajnagar, Sujit Karmakar from Sarjamda, Ambika from Bagunhatu, Lakhi Sardar from Pipla  and Vijay Karmakar from Tinplate were crowned the winners
