Jamshedpur: Tata Steel Limited, the steel giant in the country, believes in the importance of environmental conservation and organises various activities supporting this cause. This World Environment Day, Tata Steel organised a string of activities across its divisions to spread awareness about environment protection, sustenance and eco-conscious growth.
The celebration of World Environment Day spanned across its divisions in Jamshedpur, departments like Infrastructure Planning and Development; Engineering and Projects; Environment Management and Urban Services participated in various activities. The three-day celebration starting today marked the beginning of the Environment campaign. Several discussions and awareness sessions were organized to deliberate on ways to make operations more environment friendly.
The celebrations kicked off at the Steelennium Hall with the welcome address given by B K Das, VP, Coke, Sinter and Iron followed by the release of �e-book� on Environment best practices, inauguration of online internal EHSMS (Environmental, Health and Safety Management System), an audit system through GDCS.
Speaking on the occasion of World Environment Day, Anand Sen, President, TQM and Steel Business, Tata Steel, congratulated the Environment Department and said �Environment day is not a merely day event, rather it is an on-going endeavor. We have to ensure implementation of best practices inside the works and the city, which can be achieved by commitment and conviction and not merely by radical technical intervention. Initiatives should be driven by heart and not by cost and compulsion.� He further added �It is sad that we have not reached a point where we can create a positive image of the future.� He urged the Environment department to go beyond the present and work for a larger cause of environment.
In his address to the gathering, Guest of Honour, P N Singh, President, Tata Workers� Union said, �It is the duty of every individual and corporate house to work towards environmental conservation and take conscious steps to achieve the same.�
Winners of the online environment quiz competition and environment best practices contest were awarded during the function. A vote of thanks was proposed by S K Pati, Chief, Environment Management. The second session included discussion on on-line internal EHSMS Audit system through GDCS followed by discussion on latest technology on Air and Water Pollution parameter monitoring and its management.
Urban Services Department organised various events across its community centres and bustees to raise general awareness on environmental issues. The programme got kicked off with an environment awareness rally on �Clean & Green Earth� from Kasidih Community Centre on East Zone by Chief Guest and Arjuna Awardee Bagicha Singh, Senior Coach Athletics, Sports, Tata Steel, and from Dhatkidih Community Centre on West Zone by Krishna Nandan, Chief, Corporate Relations, Tata Steel.
The rally was followed by a sit and draw Competition, organised at Dhatkidih Community Centre which saw participation of about 200 children. The competition was judged by Krishna Mahato and Jaspal Singh of Jamshedpur School of Arts and Sudhanshu Kumar, Chief, Town Infrastructure & Logistics.
Mass tree plantation was planned by Infrastructure and planning department between Lime Plant and Raw Material Management office inside Works. A total of 500 saplings will be planted in this region during the three-day campaign; 150 saplings were planted in the Jugsalai muck dump by the Engineering and Projects department; 20 saplings were planted by the Urban Services at its R D Bhatta Community Centre.
