Tata Steel bags the CII-ITC Sustainability Award 2013


Jamshedpur : Tata Steel was conferred with the prestigious CII-ITC Sustainability Award, 2013 in �Category A� for Large Independent Companies at the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2013, held in New Delhi today. Tata Steel received the recognition for its exemplary performance and contribution in the economic, social and environmental segment of its business.

The award function was graced by Mr. Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs, and witnessed the representation of dignitaries and representatives from the Government of India and leaders of the corporate world. Mr. T V Narendran, Managing Director, Tata Steel (India and South East Asia) received the award.

Expressing his delight, Mr. T V Narendran, Managing Director, Tata Steel (India and South East Asia), said, �We are honoured to receive the CII- ITC Sustainability award which acknowledges Tata Steel�s efforts in the area of Sustainability. How we achieve something is more important than what we achieve and sustainability is the reason for our existence. We believe in giving back to the society and these are the principles on which we build our company and we have adhered to these for 100 years and we would like to go forward with these.�

Tata Steel has been awarded the Sustainability Prize in the Category A (for Large Independent Companies- with turnover of above Rs. 2000 Crores). The award this year makes it the 6th time for the steel maker since 2006 underlining Tata Steel’s ethos built on a commitment for values beyond steel making.

The annual Sustainability Awards, instituted by the CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development are given to encourage and recognise Indian corporate who embed sustainability in their business performance and thereby champion inter-generational parity. They promote role models in Indian industry for excellence achieved by businesses in the area of Sustainable development. These awards also assist to educate other organisations in India to adopt sustainability practices.

Tata Steel is well known in the country and internationally for its Sustainability practices for the community where it impacts about 2.5 million lives in more than 1500 villages through its interventions in health, education, employability and livelihood, drinking water, sanitation etc. Its community initiatives like multiple Rainwater harvesting projects, Solar Lighting in villages, tree plantation and wasteland development of more than 10000 hectares has significantly benefitted both the society as well as the environment. Besides, it has adopted Initiatives like Water foot printing, Energy footprinting and there is an ongoing project for Bio-Diversity assessment in its mining operations which enables Tata Steel to adopt the best practices to ensure Environmental Sustainability.

The company has adopted several Best Available steel making technologies and couples with its signature operational Improvement program KVHS, Tata Steel achieve some of the best environmental performance, and operating results. It also has developed several high end steels and end-to-end solutions for steel products as a result of which it is a leader in the higher end steel consuming segments in the country which helps it to become one of the most profitable companies globally.

In addition to this award, Tata Steel has been recognised by other prestigious awards such as National Safety Award 2012 for �Longest accident free period� (LAFP) by Director-General of Mines Safety and as winner of the CSR Excellence Award 2012 by ASSOCHAM, National CSR Committee and CSR Organizing Committee. Other esteemed awards include being �Ranked as one of the Most Ethical Companies of the world� in 2012 by Ethisphere Institute of USA; the �Award for Leadership� in HR Excellence at the CII National HR Conclave 2012 and Safety & Health Excellence Recognition 2012 awarded to Tata Steel by Worldsteel Association.
