Tata Steel and Tata Steel UISL Propose Up to 17% Power Tariff Hike in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: Tata Steel and Tata Steel UISL (formerly JUSCO) have proposed to hike the power tariffs for city and suburban consumers. The companies have jointly prepared a fresh proposal to hike power tariffs across Jamshedpur and Seraikela-Kharsawan. The move comes a mere three months after a similar hike. The previous tariff structure was implemented on April 1, 2026.

The distribution licensees have filed a formal review petition before the Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission (JSERC). Following the filing, the commission has opened a public feedback window, inviting consumers and corporate stakeholders to register their grievances, feedback, or formal objections before any definitive judgment is passed. The companies have proposed a hike of 12 per cent to 17 per cent.

This follows a similar administrative push back in March 2026, when the utilities proposed a rate adjustment that JSERC initially struck down as “impractical”. Subsequently, an increase of 4.27% for Jamshedpur and 2.58% for Seraikela-Kharsawan was rolled out from April 1. However, the utilities argue that the minor revision fails to keep them afloat against mounting operating shortfalls.

Defending the steep 12% to 17% requested increase, a spokesperson for Tata Steel and Tata Steel UISL stated that the utilities are operating under massive revenue gaps. In the distribution model for the financial year 2026–2027, Tata Steel reported a stark revenue deficit of ₹36.92 crore. Concurrently, Tata Steel UISL registered a revenue gap of ₹161.24 crore. The companies asserted that without immediate adjustments, maintaining high-tier infrastructural stability and seamless distribution logs would become financially unviable.
