Jamshedpur, April 27: Amid a surge in cyber fraud cases targeting electricity consumers across India, Tata Power has issued a strong advisory urging its customers to remain vigilant against fraudulent WhatsApp messages designed to steal personal and financial information.
The company highlighted a growing trend where cybercriminals impersonate electricity providers and send deceptive messages threatening power disconnection or requesting urgent KYC updates.
These messages often contain malicious links which, once clicked, can compromise mobile devices or lead to unauthorized access to bank accounts.
“Tata Power does not seek sensitive information such as OTPs, passwords, or banking details via WhatsApp, SMS, calls, or email,” the company clarified, emphasizing that any such request should be treated as suspicious.
Consumers have been strictly advised to avoid clicking on unknown links or downloading applications from unverified sources, as these could expose their devices and personal data to cyber threats.
The utility further recommended that customers rely solely on official platforms, including apps downloaded from trusted sources like Google Play Store or Apple App Store, for any service-related interactions.
In case of suspicious activity or financial fraud, consumers are urged to act immediately by contacting the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or lodging a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
Reinforcing the message of caution, the company stated that awareness and timely action remain the most effective defenses against cyber fraud, especially as scammers continue to adopt increasingly sophisticated tactics to exploit unsuspecting users
