Tata Motors Jamshedpur should pay Rs 728 per day to convoy drivers: Saryu Roy

Tata Motors convoy drivers demand salary hike and insurance

Jamshedpur, July 31: Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy raised a crucial issue in the Assembly on Wednesday, demanding a significant increase in the daily wages of over 2,000 Tata Motors convoy drivers. Currently, these drivers receive only Rs 370 per day for an 8-hour shift, which Roy argues is insufficient compared to the required minimum wage of Rs 728 for a 24-hour workday.

In his statement during the Zero Hour, Roy emphasized that these convoy drivers are skilled laborers and deserve better compensation. He highlighted that despite the challenging nature of their job, their current wages fall short of the statutory minimum wage rates. Additionally, Roy pointed out a lack of life insurance coverage for these drivers. The chassis they transport is insured by third parties, leaving drivers without coverage in the event of an accident.

Roy has urged the government to direct Tata Motors to provide life insurance for the convoy drivers and to adjust their wages accordingly. The Speaker of the Assembly, Ravindra Nath Mahato, has instructed the government to address these concerns. The Zero Hour Committee is expected to work towards implementing these changes soon.
