Tata Motors Jamshedpur plant takes block closure until January 1

Jamshedpur, Dec 28: Tata Motors has announced a block closure for its Jamshedpur plant from December 28 to January 1, as per a circular issued by the company management on Friday. Employees in the Vehicle Factory and Vehicle Preparation and Dispatch (Final) departments will enjoy an additional day off, extending their holiday until January 2.

The circular outlines that the plant will remain closed on December 28, 30, and 31 as part of the block closure. December 29, being a Sunday, is a regular weekly holiday. The closures are attributed to low demand, with such measures taken when there is no significant workload.

Tata Motors has an agreement with its union allowing for up to 54 block closures annually, with the number typically reaching around 50 each financial year. During closures, permanent employees receive full salary, but their leave balance is adjusted. For instance, if there are 50 closures in a year, the company pays for 25 days, while the remaining 25 are deducted from employees’ leave balances. Senior employees with sufficient leave balances are unaffected, but newer employees may face the risk of salary deductions. To address this, the company has established a leave bank system.

Additionally, a second circular confirmed that January 1 would also be a holiday due to low business requirements. However, the company reserves the right to compensate for this holiday by scheduling an additional workday in the future, with details to be announced later.

While most employees are required to report to work on January 2, those in the Vehicle Factory and Vehicle Preparation and Dispatch (Final) departments will resume duties on January 3.
