Jamshedpur, Aug 26: Automobile giant Tata Motors will undertake a block closure at its Jamshedpur facility on Tuesday, August 31, as per an internal communication sent to its employees on Thursday. Sunday August 29 is weekly off while on Monday August 30 is Krishna Janmashtami, which is not a holiday. Sunday can be a holiday and then employees will be called on duty on Monday and then there will be closure on 31st August.
All employees have been called on duty on September 1. Earlier on August 23, the company had taken a one-day block closure. 22nd August was a Sunday holiday. Block closure was also taken on August 14 and August 16, while August 15 was a holiday. Earlier in the month of August, the company had announced block closure August 9 and August 8 was a weekly holiday. There was also block closure on 31st July and 1st August was a weekly holiday. Tata Motors Jamshedpur Plant Head Vishal Badshah has issued a circular regarding the August 31 block closure which states that the workmen affected by block closure shall avail their privilege or casual leave for 50 per cent of the day and for the remaining half of the period they shall be paid their normal wages/salary by the company.
A Tata Motors spokesperson confirmed the block closure saying that it is a routine closure undertaken for necessary maintenance activities.
The employee or officer who will be called for work during the closure will have to be present otherwise full day’s salary will be deducted for the absent employees or officers and the day will be counted as employees’ leave. On the other hand, due to decrease in work order, more than three thousand temporary employees have been removed from duty. Bi-Six are not getting work and block closure is being taken continuously.
The slowdown has affected scores of industrial workers employed in the country’s densely populated ancillary hub at Adityapur in the neighbouring Seraikela-Kharswan district.
The Jamshedpur plant of the auto major produces heavy commercial vehicles – trucks, trailers, tippers, buses and other multi-axle vehicles.
Covid effect is still taking a toll on the businesses and the spare parts are not being transported from other provinces in sufficient quantity. Due to this the production of the company has decreased.
