Jamshedpur: Monday was a red letter day for Asha Kiran, a school for special children, when Arti Kant and Ravi Kant visited the school and gifted a 46 seater bus on behalf of Tata Motors.
The bus, a replacement for an old bus with a seating capacity of 32 seats, will ferry special children from their homes to school and back. The new bus from the Starbus Ultra Skool range has easy entry and exit, excellent seating comfort and confirms to government-mandated bus body code and safety features.
The function started with the Secretary AIWC, Roma Sohi reading out a report on the activities of Asha Kiran. Apart from achievements in academics and the sports field, she highlighted the new initiatives started by the school in collaboration with the parents to make life better for these special children.
These initiatives include annual dental and eyesight check up for all children, physiotherapy formalized, under the guidance of doctors of Tata Motors Hospital and appointment of a speech therapist. In these initiatives parents are also involved, so that the therapy is reinforced at home.
The secretary AIWC briefed the guests how they have started monthly meetings of the staff and committee with the doctors to help the teachers to understand children better and take remedial actions.
Finally the bus was handed over, with Arti Kant handing over the ceremonial key of the bus to Bharati Lall in presence of school children, teachers, Ravi Kant, Vice Chairman of Tata Motors and A B Lall, Plant Head, Tata Motors, Jamshedpur.
The Secretary AIWC expressed her gratitude to the Vice Chairman and the Team Tata Motors Jamshedpur, headed by A B Lall, who responded promptly to this need.
Asha Kiran is a school for children with special needs. It was started by the All India Women�s Conference (Golmuri Branch) in 1978 with 5 students on a donated premises. At present there are 140 students ranging from 2 and half years to 20 years of age in school.
The school caters to students who have intellectual impairments (of all ability levels), cerebral palsy, and hearing impairments. Apart from academics, our students are given pre-vocational and they participate in various sports activities and dramatics.
