Tata Cummins Union pushes for 20% bonus

Jamshedpur, August 9: Jamshedpur’s industrial sector is abuzz with anticipation as bonus discussions gain momentum across various companies. On Thursday, the Tata Cummins Employees Union took a proactive step by submitting a formal letter to Plant Head Ramphal Nehra, outlining their demands for the annual employee bonus. The union has requested a 20% bonus, access to the company’s balance sheet, and the prompt initiation of bonus negotiations.

This move comes as employees across Jamshedpur’s companies eagerly await news of their annual bonuses. The Tata Cummins Employees Union’s memorandum, presented in the presence of union leaders including President Diptendu Chakraborty and General Secretary Sumit, along with Plant Head Ramphal Nehra and HR representative Bhikam Singh, marks the beginning of what could be intense negotiations.

The current bonus formula, set to remain in effect until 2026, considers three main factors: production (weighted at nine points), profit (eight points), and BIS (three points), with a fixed 1.5% component. For the 2023-24 financial year, Tata Cummins set ambitious targets of producing 166,501 engines and achieving a profit of 596 crores across its three units. Impressively, the company surpassed its production goal, manufacturing a total of 168,006 engines. The Jamshedpur unit produced 105,677 engines, while the Pune-based TCPL-2 and TCPL-3 units contributed 48,132 and 14,197 engines respectively.

Given the company’s strong performance, particularly in exceeding production targets, there’s growing optimism among employees about the possibility of securing the sought-after 20% bonus. The union’s joint committee is currently focusing on the BIS aspect of the bonus calculation, which could further influence the final bonus percentage.
