Ranchi: In a major push to strengthen urban water infrastructure, the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation and the Department of Urban Development have jointly prepared an ambitious plan to extend tap water connectivity to every household in urban areas across Jharkhand. The state government is expected to spend more than ₹100 crore to expand pipeline networks and ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply by the end of the year.
Pipeline Expansion Planned for Remaining Areas
Officials stated that while pipelines have already been laid in most urban regions, several newly developed localities and areas situated near municipal corporation boundaries are still outside the water supply network. The new plan aims to bridge these gaps and extend pipeline coverage to all remaining urban households.
The initiative is expected to provide tap water connections to nearly 300,000 additional households. Authorities also indicated that there is further scope for expanding the network in the coming years depending on urban growth and demand.
Urban Bodies Asked to Submit Beneficiary Lists
The state government will execute the project through its own financial resources. Urban local bodies across the state have been directed to prepare and submit beneficiary lists to facilitate implementation. Officials added that water supply would soon begin in areas where pipelines have already been laid but connections are yet to be activated.
AMRUT Schemes to Benefit 800,000 Households
Alongside the ongoing expansion drive, water supply projects under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) Mission Phase-1 and Phase-2 are also progressing in the state. Separate schemes aimed at ensuring guaranteed water supply in urban regions are currently underway, with adequate funds allocated for the current financial year.
Upon completion of all three schemes, nearly 800,000 new households across Jharkhand are expected to receive tap water connectivity. The Central Government has also sought a preliminary report for the next phase of expansion, indicating that the projects may be extended further in the future.
Focus on Water Quality During Monsoon
The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation has also intensified preparations to maintain water purity during the monsoon season. District-level teams have been tasked with monitoring groundwater contamination after rainfall, while open water sources will also undergo regular inspection.
To strengthen surveillance, water volunteers known as Jal Sahiyas have been equipped with testing kits to identify contamination at the local level. Officials said that if polluted water is detected in any area, arrangements would immediately be made to provide safe drinking water from alternative sources.
Government Aims for Universal Urban Water Access
The initiative is being seen as a major step toward ensuring universal access to safe drinking water in Jharkhand’s urban areas. With rapid urbanization increasing demand for basic civic amenities, the government hopes the expanded pipeline network will significantly improve the quality of life for residents across the state.
