Chandil : An arduous trek along the hilly terrains of Chandil will take one to Tanisia village under Hensakocha panchayat in Chandil block.
People in this tribal-dominated village have not only been socially but also economically marginalised over the years. The village is home to just 80 persons. The village is cut off from the mainstream life of city. The biggest problem villagers face is drinking water. The village sans well and tube-well. The only hope for them has come in the form of solar lanterns.
Most of the roads in the locality remain in a pathetic condition and streets, in spite of being poorly-lit, are seen with garbage strewn everywhere.
The villagers said that government’s callousness at the worst level. People of these villages are deprived of the facilities though they have been staying there for last nearly 56 years. Visiting the area one can see women fetching water from nearby ponds for cooking and drinking. People use unhygienic toilets. Consequently, water borne diseases often affect people, especially children and elderly ones. People do not know about hygiene practice as absent of government programme and even no one NGOs reached the area.
As there is no school in the village, primary students there have to walk about four kilometres to reach school.
People said the residents of villages were facing tremendous hardships due to non-availability of the drinking water. “The women folk of these areas have to tread miles to fetch water,” the residents said adding the women face huge difficulties during the summer.
Locals alleged that some of these villages were even being deprived of the benefits under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). “The villagers are still unaware about MGNREGA as the authorities haven’t organised any awareness campaign in this regard,” the locals added.
“The scheme has failed to provide employment to the people in these villages as works under it are mainly handled by contractors and influential people,” said a villager
