Today (June 2), we celebrate the birthday of T.V. Narendran, the Global CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel, a visionary leader whose contributions have shaped not just the company, but the Indian steel industry as a whole.
With a career spanning over three decades at Tata Steel, Narendran has become synonymous with resilience, innovation, and strategic leadership. Having joined Tata Steel in 1988, he rose through the ranks with deep involvement in marketing and sales, eventually taking on the top leadership role in 2013. Notably, he led Tata Steel’s first overseas acquisition, NatSteel, and served as its President & CEO from 2008 to 2013. Since taking the helm as MD & CEO in 2017, he has steered the company through major transformations including digitalization, sustainability initiatives, and international expansion. Under his guidance, Tata Steel has remained at the forefront of the global steel sector, also committing to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045, a landmark goal in the industrial world. In recognition of his contributions to the metallurgical industry, Narendran was conferred the IIM-JRD Tata Award for Excellence in Corporate Leadership in Metallurgical Industries by the Indian Institute of Metals in November 2023. He has also been elected as the Chairman of the World Steel Association.
Beyond corporate success, TV Narendran is admired for his humility, thought leadership, and dedication to serving people. His tenure as President of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) from 2021 to 2022 further showcased his ability to lead beyond the boardroom, influencing policy and industrial growth on a national scale. He has also received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award by Lions Club International, on account of his social services, aside from his industrial contributions. He has also received the Corporate Purush Award by the Jamshedpur Citizens’ Forum for his stellar leadership and corporate service. Under his stewardship, Tata Steel also increased focus on diversity in its hiring processes, with special focus on bringing in more women within the organisation, especially in the mining sector.
Aside from his social and corporate contributions, Narendran is also known to be an avid runner, participating in numerous marathons organised by Tata Steel.
As we mark another year in the life of TV Narendran, we extend our heartfelt wishes and gratitude for his visionary leadership and continued service to industry and society. May the year ahead bring him continued success, health, and happiness.
