Jamshedpur: The steel city has once again demonstrated its high level of civic awareness and active community participation. In the ongoing Swachh Survekshan (Cleanliness Survey), Jamshedpur has secured the top spot in the state regarding citizen feedback. Conversely, several other urban local bodies (ULBs) across Jharkhand, including the state capital Ranchi, are struggling heavily with alarmingly low public engagement.
According to the latest data updated till May 22, 2026, as many as 6,002 residents from Jamshedpur have recorded their opinions and feedback on the city’s cleanliness and sanitation systems. In sharp contrast, Ranchi has registered a dismal performance, with a mere 901 citizens coming forward to participate from the entire municipal corporation area.
Understanding the Citizen Feedback Metric
Citizen feedback is considered a cornerstone of the Swachh Survekshan ranking system. Under this segment, residents are required to answer a set of 13 targeted questions concerning various aspects of local civic management. These include city cleanliness, solid waste management, condition of public toilets, street sweeping, and the efficiency of door-to-door garbage collection.
A total of 1,000 marks are allocated exclusively for the ‘Citizen Feedback’ category, making public participation a decisive factor in determining a city’s final national ranking. Civic experts emphasize that active public feedback is vital, as it offers the most realistic assessment of ground-level sanitation and drives local administrations to bridge existing gaps.
A State Divided: Top Performers vs. Single-Digit Participation
While Jamshedpur and Dhanbad are leading the chart with commendable numbers, a major chunk of Jharkhand’s urban areas shows worrying public apathy. Statistical data reveals that there are 12 urban local bodies in the state where fewer than 10 citizens recorded their feedback.
Top 5 Cities in Citizen Feedback (As of May 22, 2026):
- Jamshedpur: 6,002
- Dhanbad: 4,923
- Ramgarh: 2,035
- Chakradharpur: 1,327
- Bundu: 1,256
Regions Recording Fewer Than 10 Feedbacks:
- Chatra & Domchanch: 10 each
- Godda: 9
- Lohardaga: 8
- Dumka & Medininagar: 5 each
- Hariherganj & Ramgarh Cantt: 3 each
- Basukinath (N.P.) & Giridih: 2 each
- Chhattarpur: 1
Eyeing the National Podium
Jamshedpur’s overwhelming response comes on the heels of its historic performance in the previous year’s Swachh Survekshan. The city clinched the 3rd position nationwide in the category of cities with a population of over 10 lakhs and was ranked 1st within the state of Jharkhand.
Local authorities attribute this consistent success to the combined efforts of the municipal bodies and the proactive nature of the city’s residents. The initial flood of feedback indicates that Jamshedpur is on track to retain its prestigious identity as one of India’s cleanest cities.
