Suspension bridge to replace ageing Burmamines Overbridge in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, Nov 23: The ageing Burmamines Railway Overbridge, a crucial link between Burmamines and Jugsalai, is set to be demolished as part of the ambitious Tatanagar Railway Station redevelopment plan. In its place, a modern suspension bridge with steel-cable support will be constructed, promising smoother travel and a safer, more efficient connection for commuters.

According to the layout recently released by South Eastern Railway, the existing approach road to the overbridge falls directly within the footprint of the new station building project. As a result, authorities have opted to dismantle the current structure and build a new bridge engineered to handle rising traffic volumes in the years to come. Officials familiar with the plan said the upcoming bridge will “connect directly from Burmamines to the Jugsalai end, restoring the old route but with a far superior design and capacity.”

A suspension bridge, supported by steel cables anchored to tall towers, is known for its ability to span long distances while distributing weight effectively. Engineers note that this design not only enhances structural efficiency but also improves wind resistance. The aesthetic appeal of such bridges is an added advantage. “This type of bridge is ideal for locations with high traffic load and limited space for conventional pillars,” a railway official said.

The current curved overbridge has long been a bottleneck, causing frequent traffic jams and even forcing passengers to miss trains. Heavy vehicles are prohibited from using it, yet congestion persists, creating safety hazards for pedestrians and two-wheelers. The upcoming suspension bridge is expected to end these long-standing problems by offering a straighter, wider and more stable passage.

The Tatanagar station redevelopment, being executed under the Amrit Bharat Yojana, has been awarded to CGHV Infra Projects Limited at an estimated cost of Rs 350 crore. The project is targeted for completion within 36 months and aims to transform the station into a future-ready transport hub capable of handling exponentially increasing passenger traffic.
